Being one of the few private institutions on Nigeria, that has been in existence for close to 2 decades (as at the time of writing this article). Crescent University (CUAB) has really made remarkable remarks in the helm of education in Nigeria.

Looking at all of its achievements, how it started, it’s milestones achieved and where it is today, it’s important contributions that have shaped education. It really made me want to know the owner of this institution and the brains behind it.

On hearing the name Crescent University, I bet many would be surprised to know the religion of the founder and ownership of this private institution and of what value the university was founded.

Who is the owner of Crescent University?

Crescent University was founded by Judge Bola A. Ajibola. In December 2005 Judge Bola Ajibola made the move to establish Crescent university but he did so under the banner of the Islamic Mission for Africa.

Who is judge Bola Ajibola?

Prince Bola Ajibola’s journey began in Owu, near Abeokuta, Nigeria. He was born on March 22, 1934 into the prestigious Owu royal family of Oba Abdul-Salam Ajibola Gbadela II.

Growing up, Ajibola attended Owu Baptist Day School and later, Baptist Boys’ High School in Abeokuta from 1942 to 1955. 

His quest for knowledge led him to the University of London’s Holborn College of Law, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B.) from 1959 to 1962.

He was then called to the English Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1962. Returning to Nigeria, he embarked on a successful career in law, specialising in commercial law and international arbitration.

Prince Bola Ajibola made significant contributions to society. He chaired the panel appointed by the Plateau State government to investigate the 2008 Jos riots.

In 2005, he founded Crescent University, an institution dedicated to Islamic and co-educational values. 

He also served as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN).

From 1999 to 2002, Ajibola served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, representing his country on the international stage.

Prince Bola Ajibola’s life was not only marked by professional achievements but also by his personal journey.

He was married to Olufunmilayo Janet Abeni Ajibola until her passing in London on June 8, 2016.

Sadly, Prince Bola Ajibola passed away on April 9, 2023, at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of service to both his nation and the field of law.

Crescent University, located in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, has a unique and compelling history. 

It was established in response to the vision and recommendations of the Educational Board of the Islamic Mission for Africa (IMA) in 2002. 

This institution was brought into existence through the dedication of Judge Bola Ajibola, who championed its establishment under the banner of the Islamic Mission for Africa.

However, it is good to note that Crescent university is not exclusive or restricted to any particular religion or race as it welcome all students from different religion and race.

The journey of Crescent University reached a significant milestone when the National Universities Commission (NUC) officially approved its establishment in 2005. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in higher education in Nigeria.

Crescent University is not just a university; it’s a hub of academic diversity. It comprises several colleges, each dedicated to specific fields of study. These includes:
